In Japan, Obon (Buddha's day) is generally held from August 13th to 16th, and families who work in the city or far away go home and visit the graves of their ancestors at this time. There are “Mukaebon (day to meet)” when ancestors return to their homes from the other world, and “Okuribon (day to send)” when they return to the other world. I sometimes wonder if it can be dismissed as an old event or custom. Isn't it okay to visit graves outside of Obon (Buddha's day)? Is there something absolute that cannot be compromised during this period? I have a naive question.

Apart from whether or not you believe in superstition, the occult, and the existence of spirits, I wondered if I could do something interesting.

My parents' house, the Ishikawa family, is located a little near the Kitakami River in Ichinoseki City, Iwate Prefecture. It is also close to Hiraizumi, a World Heritage Site. It is an old family that has been around since the Edo period (17th century), and although there are no documents left, I am said to be the 17th generation. It is said that during the Edo period, it prospered and flourished by manufacturing and selling vinegar, and owned a considerable amount of land. However, after World War II, the Ishikawa family, who were impatient with the system of agricultural land reform, misunderstood that the land would be taken away by the government, and sold most of the land to the general public. Currently, about 1.2 hectares of forests and fields, including the family home, remain.

There are some historical traces from the Edo period and the Meiji period around my parents' house. Just imagining the scenery where many ancestors lived here for generations makes me feel romantic. This time, I narrowed it down to three locations and tried field recording. The 13th and 14th of the three days of Obon that were scheduled to be recorded were canceled due to rain. There was a sunny period during the daytime, but the cicadas were noisy, so I removed it on purpose. By the way, this time my nephew (13 years old), who is a direct descendant of my parents' family, is coming from Kyoto. I think it was a special recording in a way.

As a method, when I start recording, I return home and leave the recording site unattended. Since recording alone lacks interest, we installed three wind chimes (Nambu ironware wind chime, Suzumushi wind chime, and Matsumushi wind chime). There is almost no wind at night, but sometimes the wind or something flows. Both places are close to prefectural roads, so the sound of cars passing by is very rare. Equipment uses TASCAM DR-05X. Noise that is difficult to hear and extreme high-frequency sounds caused by insects are adjusted by equalizing. No effects are used. Due to the nature of the recording target, the sound pressure and volume could not be increased any further. When listening, it is recommended to turn up the volume or use headphones so that you can hear detailed sounds.

It was an experiment to see what would be recorded if we made a single recording at "the day when ancestors and direct descendants gather in a historic land, that spiritual place." It doesn't mean that something will happen, but it might be more interesting to listen to it with the imagination that it might be some kind of sound.

/// Tracks Description ///

[ Track 1 & 2 (Disc 1) - Well Pond ]
The well has been considered a spiritual place since ancient times and cannot be neglected. This well has been active since the Edo period (17th century). It seems that there used to be three well ponds in the old days, but now there seems to be only one. Red-bellied newts have lived in this pond since ancient times. However, now crayfish have become conspicuous.
The sound of insects echoes all the time, the wind chime shakes violently from time to time, water droplets pop, and the faint croaking of a bullfrog can also be heard. A couple of times I hear voices, and they sound similar to the voice of an old man who lived nearby and passed away last year. The eerie sounds of planes also pass by over a long period of time. A bass sound like a bee's wing or an electronic sound passes in front of the microphone several times. The identity is unknown, but it is a sound that stirs the imagination. It is an interesting recording with changes everywhere throughout.

[ Track 3 & 4 (Disc 2-1) Retirement House ]
The retirement house, which was also a detached house from my parents' house, has collapsed and disappeared, but the stone wall and the pond in front of it have become a wetland and still remain. There are many photographs taken in front of this building, so it seems that it was a special building when it existed.
It is a space surrounded by bamboo forest, maple, cedar and various trees. The sound of insects is always resounding here. The sound of the raindrops falling on the rain cover is loud and a little worrisome. Since it is originally a wetland, even a little rainfall will turn into a shallow swamp, and you can hear the sound of water droplets and air bubbles from time to time. Strangely enough, there is no wind here, and the wind chime sways several times when I forget it. Even in this recording, eerie airplane sounds pass by several times. In addition, there are several parts where you can hear footsteps faintly, although I can't say which part. Is it just my imagination?

[ Track 5 (Disc 2-2) Edo Period Cemetary ]
After the Meiji era (early 20th century), it moved to a new grave, but there are about 27 old graves and stone Buddhas quietly on the hill behind my parents' house. The tombs vary in size and shape and are covered with moss. It's a place that seems to be the most spiritual, but for some reason it's a place that has a calming atmosphere rather than being scary.
The wind chimes are concentrated at the beginning and swaying. As with other tracks, when the wind chimes ring, there are times when the bass clings to the sound, which is hard to hear. Although it is reduced by equalizing, it can be confirmed with the master audio, so it must be some kind of sound. The identity is unknown. Also, in a forest where there should be no people, I hear the sound of sneezing once. It also resembles my father's sneeze, who died five years ago. There was no change in the sound in the latter half of the recording, so I recorded only the first half of the 24 minutes. As the Obon (Buddha's day) ended, it became quieter, and I felt as if my ancestors had gone back to the other world.

Track 1 & 2 (Disc 1): 2022
Track 3 & 4 (Disc 2-1): 2022
Track 5 (Disc 2-2): 2022

/// 各曲解説 ///

[ Track 1 & 2 (Disc 1)

[ Track 3 & 4 (Disc 2-1)

[ Track 5 (Disc 2-2)
